What is a garment buying house in Bangladesh, and do you need one?
If you are an apparel buyer looking at Bangladesh, one of the first terms you will run into is “buying house.” It is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — links in the country’s garment supply chain. This guide explains what a buying house actually does, how it is different from a factory, and when using one is the smart move.
What a buying house actually is
A garment buying house is a sourcing agent that works on behalf of the buyer, not the factory. Its job is to be your eyes, ears and hands on the ground in Bangladesh: finding suitable factories, negotiating and costing, managing samples, following production, and controlling quality — so that you get the right product, at the right price, made to the right standard, delivered on time.
Crucially, a true buying house does not own a factory. That independence is the point: because it has no production lines of its own to fill, its advice is not biased toward a particular factory. It recommends what is right for your order.
How it differs from the alternatives
- Factory (manufacturer): Makes the garments. Great if you already know exactly which factory you want and have the capacity to manage it directly — but a single factory can only offer what it makes, and won’t tell you when a competitor down the road is a better fit.
- Trading company / merchant exporter: Buys and sells garments on its own account, taking a margin on the goods. Simple, but the margin is usually inside the price, so it can be less transparent.
- Buying house / agent: Represents you, earns a transparent commission on the FOB value, and stays neutral across factories.
When a buying house makes sense
Using a buying house is usually worth it when:
- You don’t have your own sourcing office or staff in Bangladesh.
- You want a neutral party to find the best factory rather than being locked to one.
- Compliance and quality control matter to your brand and your customers.
- You value predictable delivery over squeezing out the last cent of price.
The bottom line
A good buying house pays for itself by reducing risk — the risk of a compliance failure, a late shipment, or an off-quality delivery. If you want a partner on the ground who is on your side of the table, that is exactly what a buying house is for.
