How to choose a knitwear factory in Bangladesh: 7 things to check

30 June 2026 · Almekora Global

Bangladesh has thousands of knitwear factories, and they are not created equal. Picking the wrong one leads to late shipments, quality problems, or worse — a compliance failure that stops your goods at the border. Here are the seven things an experienced buying house checks before putting a factory in front of a buyer.

1. Compliance and audit status

First, always. Does the factory hold valid social audits (BSCI, SMETA) and structural safety certification (Accord/RSC)? Are there unresolved critical findings? A cheap price from a non-compliant factory is the most expensive mistake you can make.

2. The right product match

Knitwear is not one thing. A factory brilliant at basic jersey t-shirts may struggle with full-fashion sweaters or brushed fleece. Match the factory’s real specialism and machinery to your specific product — not just its general “knitwear” label.

3. Capacity vs your order

Too big and your order is a low priority they can bump; too small and they can’t hold your delivery date. The right fit is a factory where your programme is meaningful but comfortably within capacity.

4. Quality systems

Does the factory have a functioning QC process — inline checks, measurement control, a working AQL system — or does it rely on end-of-line sorting? Systematic quality beats hopeful inspection every time.

5. Financial stability

A factory under financial stress cuts corners, delays purchases of your fabric and trims, or worst case collapses mid-order. Stability protects your critical path.

6. Communication

How quickly and clearly does the factory respond? Across time zones, a factory that communicates well is worth a small premium — it is the difference between catching a problem early and discovering it at the deadline.

7. Lead time honesty

Beware the factory that promises whatever you want to hear. A realistic lead time you can plan around is far more valuable than an optimistic one that slips.

The shortcut: let someone who does this daily vet it for you

Checking all seven properly takes local presence, relationships and experience. That is exactly what a buying house brings — we score every factory on a weighted scorecard (with compliance weighted highest) before it ever handles your order.
